Should I Get Residency for My Children’s Future Options?

Some residency options for your children expire before they need them.

Some residency options for your children expire before they ever need them.

I have a ten-year-old.

I have absolutely no idea where he’ll be at twenty.

Maybe he studies overseas. Maybe he builds a company somewhere I’ve never lived. Maybe he never wants to leave Colorado.

And that’s exactly the point.

I’m not trying to predict his life. I’m trying to make sure he has the freedom to choose it.

Because with residency and citizenship, timing matters. Some programs include dependent children only through a certain age. Some pathways take years. And once a child ages out, the opportunity you thought you were building for the whole family can suddenly become a very different proposition.

So I don’t just ask my clients, “Where do you want to live?”

I ask about the eighteen-year-old.

The twenty-five-year-old.

The child who may someday say, “Actually, I want to build my life somewhere else.”

You don’t need to know what that life looks like.

You just need to make sure they have options when they’re old enough to decide for themselves.

Program rules change often, sometimes quarterly. Figures and timelines here reflect the date of publication. Confirm current requirements before acting. This is a starting point, not legal, tax, or investment advice.

Have a situation worth thinking through?

Every engagement begins with a confidential conversation about your family's objectives, not a program pitch.
